Fall is among us and we are loving the crunchy leaves and crisp air. The change in season can also mean having to stay indoors due to inclement weather. Let’s face it, being stuck indoors is as hard for us parents as it is for our kids. What is a parent to do to help keep their kids entertained during the long days indoors? Whether it’s a rainy day, a snow day, or a sick day, we’ve gathered our 5 favorite indoor activities for kids to help you get through the day.

  1. Build a fort!

Remember how fun it was when YOU were a kid? Now you get to relive your fondest memories of fort building! The best part? You get to make new fun fortress memories with your little one.

Grab some chairs and a large blanket, and you’ve got yourselves an oasis of solitude for you and your child. Make it fun and fancy by adding some string lights to your fort, or make it cozy by adding some pillows, a flashlight, and books to read to your child underneath the fort.

You can also place Square Panda’s  Smart Letters inside and around the fort for an educational scavenger hunt!

  1. Craft a DIY Bookmark

With all those fun books you and your child will be cozying up to in your fort, you are going to need a bookmark to hold your place in between activities! Grab some safety scissors, paper, glue, and even glitter! Have a blast while you and your child draw your favorite characters or scenes from your book and decorate them to your heart’s desire.

Allow them to dry while you continue with your other awesome indoor activities planned for the day.

  1. Play with your food!

Create a fun, hands-on learning project that you and your kids can enjoy! Grab some brown sugar and unscented cooking oil of your choice. Mix one part sugar with one part oil for a fun DIY body scrub. Make it a fun educational activity for your children by using measuring cups and spoons and let them do the measuring!

This exercise can also double as a soothing sensory tool. Simply scoop the scrub mixture into a sealed ziplock bag and create a calming squeeze toy to help alleviate restlessness and boredom for your children. You can also add small toys or stickers inside the ziplock bag for a sensory version of hide-and-seek!

  1. Make an indoor obstacle course!

Lay some hula hoops on the floor for a challenging “tire run”, grab a toy as a placeholder and have your child run around it three times, carefully jump from couch to couch (because the ground is hot lava!), and stack a bunch of throw pillows for your child to break through the finish line! Oh, and remember that fort you just built? Have your child army crawl under the fort for some much needed rest, because this indoor activity is sure to be a hit!
